Sealed linear scale

Sealed linear encoders are ideal for machine-tool environments. The scale is enclosed in an anodized aluminum housing with elastic sealing lips that protect the guideway and scanning carriage from chips, dust, and coolant. The scanning carriage moves with very low friction inside the scale, producing stable signals and long operational life. Sealed encoders are mounted externally on a block and coupled to the machine guideway via a flexible coupling that compensates for misalignment. Heidenhain offers compact thin-line housings for narrow installations up to ~2040 mm measuring length and full-size housings engineered for high resistance to vibration for short to medium measuring ranges.

Exposed linear scale

Exposed linear encoders are intended for machines that demand the highest metrological performance. With an open scale and readhead design, these systems minimize mechanical hysteresis and thermal gradients to deliver maximum accuracy and repeatability. They are commonly used where measurement uncertainty must be minimized and the environment can be controlled.
