Measuring angles with rotary encoders

In Heidenhain rotary encoder with stator coupling and integral bearing, the graduated encoder disk is coupled straight to the shaft to be measured. The ball bearing is used to guide the scanning unit on the shaft, supported by stator coupling. Stator coupling should soak up only the torque occurring because of friction in the bearing while angular acceleration of the shaft happens, therefore it minimizes both dynamic and static measuring error. Axial motion of the measured shaft is compensated by coupling mounted on the stator. Few more advantages of stator coupling are:

• Hollow through shaft possible

There are three different principles of mechanical design:
• Angle encoders with integrated stator coupling
• Angle encoders with integral bearing
• Angle encoders with hollow shaft and

stator coupling is designed that it should only absorb that torque occurred by friction in the bearing while angular acceleration of shaft. So for outstanding dynamic performance there are RCN, RON, RPN angle encoders and absolute encoders.

With an incorporated stator coupling, the system accuracy and precision also includes the deviations from the shaft coupling.

Angle encoder with integral bearing
